HAIRBALLS

There is one moment few months ago that my only cat "Gayang" got the hairball symptoms; vomiting, refused to eat nor drink n constipation. That time I'm very worried of him n even appeared on my mind that I would lose him.. (T_T)

What I did was I started to go Google about hairballs in cats. I learned a lot from the causes, symptoms n even remedies. Here are what I want to share with you. Hairballs develop as a result of your cat’s healthy and fastidious grooming routine. It will be disgusting n irritating that you will have to clean up all mess. Hehehehe... But believe me if you love your cat you wouldn't have to complaint.

When your cat grooms himself, tiny hook-like structures on his tongue catch loose and dead hair, which is then swallowed. The majority of this hair passes all the way through the digestive tract with no problems. But if some hair stays in the stomach, it can form a hairball. Ultimately, your cat will vomit the hairball to get rid of it. Because hairballs pass through the narrow esophagus on the way out, they often appear thin and tubelike, rather than round.

Eventually hairballs can block your cat's digestive system and result in death. Scary right? That's why i felt so worried n sad everytime I look at him that days. He never complained. What he will do was just sat in sofa n his basket n sleep, eyes willl open sometimes very small though. Once a while he will go to his water bowl and just sat there stared at the water bowl without drink it. He smelled the water n then left. It was so pathetic therefore, I will fed him the water. It was not easy though, hahahah!

You maybe wondering why I dont take him to the Vets right? Its way soooo expensive and to find a goverment vets was so hard. I had google n found one goverment veterinary hospital near in Cheras but mom said we wait for another day to see if things got better.

so weak at this time without food for 3days and only having a little bit of water

Day4 : Gayang started to eat a little bit and he can drink some water by himself. I was about to go to the hospital when he started to become better. He heard n understand maybe that I asked him be strong =) After that he become better and much better. Then I read somewhere in the site that I have to feed him with some margerine or butter to clear his intestine or stomach. I did that as well. Just spread margarine (room temperatured) to do spoon and slide it to your cat's lip n let them lick it.

Only after that I watch his diet n hygiene carefully. These are also ways to prevent the hairballs. First, always help them to groom themselves especially for long-breed cats like mine =) buy a cat's comb n comb their hairs instead of letting your cat lick them everytime, that is where hairballs come from. You can observe that their tongue has hard surface that when they lick or groom their fur will be stick to the tongue and eventually swallow it to their stomach.

Secondly, you have to feed them with foods that have hairball formula in it. Most of cat's food manufacturer will have one of it in their variety of food choices.

Third, you haveto discourage excessive grooming by distracting them with toys or play with them. Long-breed cats love grooming as they feel not comfortable with their long hairs I guess?? hahahah!

Fourth, you may also try buying wheat grass (if your cat is a home cat like mine). You can buy it at any pet shop and grow them yourself. This is because cat needs some fiber too to have a good digestive stomach like us! (I read somewhere in the site as well) and I have tried that but Gayang seems not liking the grass.




 The grass end up drying to death.hahahah!

Hi there! This is my cute n big cat. You can call him hurmm.. oh well.. My Mum call him Bob sometimes Bobby but me call him Gayang (don't know what's that meant but it suppose to be "Sayang" in malay but somehow I changed it.. hehe :)

A very lazy cat. Love to sleep a lot!! just wake up to eat and then will go back to sleep. Don't ever bother to play more than 5minutes.. huhu.. (most probably because i fed him so much! haha)

Gayang only love being hug by my mum but not me.. huh!! But I love to disturb him so much.. What I'll do is to wake him up from his sleep n hug him tightly n he will try very hard to escape from my hug..haha!

So this is an introductory story about my cat...... To be continue.....
